A 500-YEAR-OLD WAGASHI EMPIRE HONORS THE PAST AND PRESENT AT ITS FASHIONABLE FLAGSHIP.
All Japanese people recognize a Toraya bag. This wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) purveyor has been operating since the 1500s and carries a cachet in confectionery equal to Chanel in fashion. Some centuries-old recipes are injected with modern flavors like fruit and chocolate. Its Akasaka flagship store uses traditional yet contemporary decor crafted with Japanese cypress wood.
Toraya (literally meaning “tiger store”) exclusives include its famous tiger-striped Senri no Kaze yokan (sweet bean jelly). Toraya has 80 outlets across Japan, but only the main Tokyo and Kyoto branches offer haute couture customized wagashi (reservations required).
